EPISODE 31: A DEMON NAMED LOVE (S02E19 "I Only Have Eyes For You")

To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It’s-it’s ... it’s not done because people deserve it. It’s done because they need it.
— Giles

It's a classic story: Boy loves girl, girl loves boy, girl is his high school teacher, they die in a murder-suicide shooting before the big dance in 1955, boy becomes poltergeist and recreates the tragedy by possessing innocents until a gender-swapped Angel/Buffy give them the cathartic forgiveness they need to escape the cycle of toxic masculinity and rage. How many times have we heard this one, honestly?

The Buffy Boys are haunting the punch bowl in S02E19 "I Only Have Eyes for You".

Key Buffy Bits from this episode include:

  • The Déjà Vu of Grief: the supernatural amplification of recursive tragedy

  • Remixing the limitations of gender - Angel and Buffy's role-swapping and power dynamics
